ACE 1200 Campervans: Features and Benefits
We get asked a lot about the ACE 1200 campervan at Struans Leisure Dundee, so here's what it actually offers. It's a compact campervan on a Fiat Ducato chassis, built as a proper touring vehicle rather than just a van with a bed in the back.
What sleeping arrangements does the ACE 1200 come in?
Three layouts, each named for how the bed works:
- RL (rear parallel lounge): Rear lounge seating that converts into a bed at night, sleeping two.
- RLT: The same lounge, plus an elevating roof with a pop-top double bed above, taking it to 4 berths.
- SL (single lengthwise): Fixed single beds over the rear garage, sleeping two separately. Good for friends or older kids who'd rather not share.
- SLT: The same fixed singles, plus the elevating roof and pop-top double, sleeping four.
- GL (double crosswise): A fixed double bed over the rear garage, already made up, sleeping two.
- GLT: The same fixed double, plus the pop-top double above, up to 4 berths.
Which one suits you comes down to numbers travelling and whether you want a bed already made up or don't mind converting the lounge each night
What's the kitchen like in the ACE 1200?
It's set up properly for cooking on the road, not just boiling a kettle:
- Two-burner stainless steel hob and sink combination, with glass lids to fold away when not in use
- Built-in flatbed microwave
- 80-litre Dometic compressor fridge, a decent size for a van this length
- Lagos laminate worktop, with a fold-away extension for extra prep space when you need it
What are the washroom facilities like?
It doesn't feel like an afterthought compared with the rest of the van:
- Shower tray with a foldaway washbasin, so the space works for both washing and showering without feeling cramped
- Ecocamel Jetstorm shower head, designed for a genuinely powerful shower while using less water, useful when you're relying on the onboard tank rather than mains pressure
- Thetford cassette toilet with an electric flush
- Upper vanity cupboard with a mirror and LED lighting
Will it cope with Scotland's roads?
Yes. The ACE 1200 is built with narrow coastal routes and highland passes in mind, which matters given how many of Scotland's best routes are single-track or tightly winding. It also carries a 60-litre fuel tank plus a 19-litre AdBlue tank, useful when you're heading further north and fuel stops get few and far between.
Do you need a special licence to drive one?
Usually not. The ACE 1200 has a maximum weight of 3.5 tonnes, and a standard UK category B car licence covers vehicles up to 3,500kg. If you passed your test in a car, you can almost certainly drive this without anything extra. Rear reversing sensors are also available as an optional extra, useful given the rear garage you can't see over.
What if you need more space than a campervan offers?
The ACE 1500 motorhome, which we also stock, is built on a Ford chassis in 2-berth and 4-berth layouts, with a large rear garage, USB charging, and an interior that feels closer to a hotel room than a typical motorhome. Both the 1200 and 1500 are built in the UK by Swift, the country's largest leisure vehicle manufacturer, which counts for something when it comes to parts and servicing down the line.
